Learn to Bulk Shop

Even if you have never bulk shopped before now, it’s not too late to learn. Buying products in large quantities isn’t a new idea. People have been doing it for years. How well you do it is actually determined by your planning, your determination, your personal contacts, and the storage room that you have available.

Once you get the knack to it, and there is a certain way to go about the task of shopping in bulk, you can become as skilled as the next individual. Bulk shopping is an excellent way to save money as you tap into a higher level of value that is only available with bulk purchases. Typically, the prices of many items are reduced when you purchase in large quantities.

Whether or not you choose to take advantage of warehouse stores like BJ’s, Sam’s Club, and Costco, you can save oodles of money when you buy in bulk. Lots of stores allow you to buy cases of their products. When you shop at stores that do not offer cases, you can make your purchase by picking up the quantity you want as single items.

Learning how to shop in bulk is a process that may take you several months to orchestrate. It’s not as simple as picking up a case of this and a case of that when the items go on sale. You need to plan your bulk shopping carefully so that you don’t purchase more items than you can use or run out of pasta when you still have a case and a half of spaghetti sauce.

Things to Watch Out For When You Bulk Shop

  • Expiration Dates: Always check the expiration dates on the packages that you intend to purchase to ensure that you have sufficient time to use the items.
  • Damaged Packaging: It’s important not to purchase items with packaging that is dented, torn, wet, or dirty. Items found in this type of packaging are less likely to hold up well.
  • Check sizes and brands: Make sure you pickup the correct size and brand so that you receive the proper discount.
  • Check your storage capacity before shopping: If you don’t have the room to keep your items, storing them properly, then there really isn’t any point to buying them.
  • Keep inventory: Keep a notebook in which you list your quantities, or check to see what is on your shelves before leaving to go to the store.

Tips to Help You Save Even More

  • Split a case with a friend or neighbor: Certain items may have shorter expiration dates, so you may want to split a case to avoid waste. This is a great strategy as well for items that you want to purchase but may not need in quantity.
  • Time your purchases: Buy items seasonally during the time when you have the greatest demand for them, e.g. a case of cranberry sauce right before Thanksgiving or a case of butter right before Christmas cookie baking time.

We have a deep freezer, which has been great for us. We purchase a 1/4 beef, and 1/2 hog about once a year. If you can find people to go in with you to purchase the other portions, you can even get your meat from a local farmer and have it processed the way you want. When you do this, you generally pay the farmer a per pound price based on the live weight of the animal, and then pay processing fees at your local butcher. It's nice to pay the same price for a ribeye as a burger.
