Brunch is one of my favorite ways to entertain friends and family- in the morning everyone is in a relaxed mood, there is no pressure for fancy food and the menu options are endless. Early in the day there is a comforting and rejuvenating spirit in my home with the aroma of fresh coffee brewing, crisp morning air coming through the screen door and something delicious baking in the oven- it is such a pleasure to be able to share it with friends.
Tips for Creating a Cozy Feeling
There is a naturally cozy feeling that comes with hosting guests in the morning, but there are some ways to further enhance those elements so they reach out and envelop your guests as they come through the door. My first tip for creating that fresh, clean feeling in the morning is to open the windows and doors- even on a rainy morning. The dewy morning air will instantly refresh your home. The second tip is to have a casual gathering of fresh flowers or herbs on your table. The element of a beautiful living thing like a flower brings a naturally rejuvenating spirit to your home. The third thing you should think about is the aromas that will be filling your house when they arrive. I like to have fresh coffee brewing and something in the oven that is ready to be pulled out just when they arrive. Finally, I like to serve family style items that are casual and rustic, like an omelet served right in the skillet, so there is a relaxed feeling to the meal.
As I mentioned, I always have something baking in the oven when my guests arrive. And while I like to have most everything done ahead of time, it is great to leave a few fun details to do while my guests are gathered in the kitchen sipping coffee. One of my favorite things to do is to put the finishing touches on something decadent- like pouring the glaze over hot from the oven scones or sweet rolls. I offer them to my guests when the glaze is still dripping- it is a fabulous way to start off a party. Another fun thing to do while your guests are there is to offer to make them a custom smoothie for them to enjoy with brunch. You can have all of the options displayed in bowls, then let them select their favorite combination. Your friends will love being a part of the preparation in the kitchen- it will make them feel right at home... without having to do the dishes!
