Inspiration: What Turns You On?

Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas: The 16 Year old Inspiration for all of us!

Look outside yourself to see what others do to inspire you. As of this writing, it is not hard to be inspired … we have the Olympics (over 5,000 hours broadcast on TV) and we marvel at what these young athletes can do to become the best of the best.  How is it that some of these athletes can stay so motivated?  They exercise for hours daily over many months and years, they eat all the right foods and then compete at the highest level with the mental toughness of Hercules and then they don’t choke under the pressure of the whole world watching?  Now that is inspiring.

Can this inspiration help us get off the couch?  It’s August, time to think about the kids or grandkids getting back to school.  The new shows of the fall are being advertised on TV and all this might and should remind you of your youth and the excitement of starting a new school year.  I still remember shopping for new clothes, pens and pencils, backpacks, etc. and thinking about what sports or band I might try out for.  It was fun and yes, the buzz word of the day … Inspiring.  Here are a few recommendations as the fall approaches

  1. See if the local community college needs adjunct professors … many need part-time night or on-line professors and you can be the person that motivates a young adult to continue their education.
  2. Volunteer at a local Veterans clinic or hospital … every state in the nation has Veterans facilities and you can offer all types of help to our many Veterans in need.
  3. Volunteer to be an assistant coach for a local school in the sport that you love … again, you just might be that coach that inspires a young athlete to go to the Olympics.
  4. Volunteer in this election season … encourage people to register to vote, help the party of your choice or run for a local office, all to inspire the future leaders in our communities.

Can the election season be inspiring? Only three months to a very important election.  I don’t want to get into politics but the presidential election is approaching and perhaps participating in that process might be a way for you to be inspired.  These elections are critical for our country.  I am educating myself on the different platforms and issues and I truly want to make sure that when I vote, I vote in an educated way.  I care deeply about our nation, its defense and security (not hard to figure based on my military background) but I want to make sure we balance what our government can and should do and what is fiscally possible given that all our wallets are hurting right now.  So I am inspiring you to make sure you are ready to vote … and hope that you use the fall months to be an educated voter.  Our nation needs all of us to participant in this important election.

Finally, don’t forget there are Veterans in need out there.  Keep the men and women of our military in your thoughts and prayers. They are still fighting around the world and defending our freedoms while their families worry day and night for the safe return.  To me there is nothing more inspiring … Ordinary Americans committing themselves to accomplish the extra-ordinary on our behalf. When you see them in uniform, thank them for their service to this great nation.

Now go get Inspired!
My best, and “Check Six” …
